Every winter, right around December, my phone starts lighting up.
Friends from up north. Neighbors from my old hometown. Family sending pictures of snow-covered driveways and thermometers that look unreasonable.
“Get me out of here.”

And a few days later, they do.
They drive down, or hop on a flight, to Southwest Florida, step into the warm air, and for a moment, it’s perfect.
Sunshine. Palm trees. No jackets.
Then, almost inevitably, the question comes:
“Alright… now what do we do?”
Over the years, I’ve become the unofficial keeper of that answer. A running list. Built slowly. Trip by trip. Detour by detour.
And if you’re searching for the best things to do in Southwest Florida, this is that list.

- 🍔 Cabbage Key (Pine Island) – take a boat ride to a tiny island and grab a cheeseburger in a laid-back dollar-bill covered pub.
💡 Do these five, and you’ll feel like you really experienced Southwest Florida.

I wanted to add a 6th must do – but I’ll let you pick becasue they are all good. No Southwest Florida trip is complete without at least one great ice cream stop.
- Love Boat Ice Cream – (Fort Myers Beach) huge portions, classic homemade flavors, a true local favorite
- Sun Harvest Citrus – (Fort Myers) fresh citrus soft serve that hits different on a hot day. Free juice and citrus samples.
- Royal Scoop – (Bonita Springs) – old school, big flavors classic ice cream shop vibe
- Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice Cream – (Sanibel) – Iconic Sanibel Stop
👉 These are the kind of simple stops your kids will remember just as much as the big attractions.
🏖️ Southwest Florida Beaches: The Smart Way to Do It

Southwest Florida beaches really are that good.
Soft white sand. Warm, gentle Gulf water. Dolphins offshore if you’re lucky (watch for the pelicans – they like to follow the pods).
But here’s the secret most visitors miss:
👉 How you do the beach matters just as much as where you go.
- Arrive before 9am → easier parking, fewer crowds
- Metered parking is $5 an hour – if you plan to stay 4 hours there are many private $20 lots and you can stay as long as you want.
- Eat early (around 11am) → bring a picnic or find no waits in the beach restaurants and food trucks.
- Wrap up by 1pm → beat the heat and the traffic
We usually treat the beach as a half-day experience, not the whole day. Two or Three applications of sunscreen (at least every two hours) is about my limit before I’m ready to get out of the sun. This leaves time for an afternoon nap, and an evening activity.
